Early Career Researcher/Student Committee
This Committee’s role is to identify issues and initiatives that are important to students and early career researchers (ECR) within the Australian Research Network for Advanced Materials thereby enhancing their research experience and career prospects. Note: an early career researcher is defined as someone who has completed their PhD within the past five (5) years.
The Committee’s charter is to establish initiatives targeted towards students and ECRs such as collaborative research visits, scientific meetings, workshops and events, mentoring programs, recommending travel bursaries, setting up ECR-specific web information, encouraging collaboration and fostering joint grant applications. The Committee’s role is also to assess and recommend funding levels of the four research related initiatives detailed below to the National Executive of the Australian Research Network for Advanced Materials.
The ECR/Student Committee shall consist of:
- Two (2) ECR members of ARNAM
- Two (2) Student members of ARNAM
Nominations will be sought for positions (normally two year terms) and the ARNAM Executive Committee will select the Committee from nominations.
For Committee management and budget allocation purposes four initiatives have been identified:
1. Student Scholarships for Collaborative Research
These scholarships are intended to contribute to the travelling expenses of students engaged in collaborative research visits to other laboratories/institutes, both nationally and internationally. The timeframe for such visits is a minimum of two (2) weeks to a maximum of six (6) months.
These expenses may include a contribution towards airfares or other means of travel, accommodation costs and living expenses.
Note: These funds are for the sole use of travel and living expenses and cannot be used to support research expenses.
Application and Assessment Procedure:
- Please fill in the application form and include a one to two page summary addressing the selection criteria, a one page CV and a letter of support from your supervisor and a second letter of support from the collaborative institution. Please include the monetary contribution from your home institution in your costs. (for full details see the Application Form for Student Scholarships for Collaborative Research).
- Applications are to be submitted in one document, preferably a PDF document.
- The Committee will assess applications against criteria and recommend successful applicants and level of funding to the Australian Research Network for Advanced Materials Executive Committee.
- The Committee will endeavour to inform successful applicants within one month of application closing date.
2. ECR Fellowships for Collaborative Research
These funds are intended to contribute to the traveling expenses of ECR’s engaged in collaborative research visits to other laboratories and institutes both nationally and internationally.
The timeframe for such visits is a minimum of two (2) weeks to a maximum of six (6) months.
Note: these funds cannot be used to support research expenses.
These expenses may include a contribution towards airfares or other means of travel, accommodation costs and living expenses.
Application and Assessment Procedure:

Please include the monetary contribution from your home institution in your costs. (for full details see the Application Form for ECR Fellowships for Collaborative Research).
- Applications are to be submitted in one document, preferably a Word document.
- The Committee will assess applications against criteria and recommend successful applicants and level of funding to the Australian Research Network for Advanced Materials Executive Committee.
- The Committee will endeavour to inform successful applicants within one month of application closing date.
3. Scientific Meetings/Workshops for ECRs/Students
Funds have been allocated to allow ECRs/students to organize scientific meetings and/or mini conferences/workshops to encourage interaction between ECR’s and students. These meetings can be organized in areas of common research interest. A good example is the Nanoindentation workshop held in Kioloa, NSW, March 2005 – see website: http://www.rsphysse.anu.edu.au/nanoindentation/
Application and Assessment Procedure:
- Applications should address the following criteria: nature of meeting (research area/topic to be addressed), a detailed justification of the funds requested, location of meeting, size of expected audience and details of the researchers involved to organize the meeting.
- Applications are to be submitted in one document, preferably a Word document.
- The Committee will assess the applications and decide on the type and number of meetings (including the scope of event) to be held annually.
- The Committee will assess applications against criteria and recommend successful applicants and level of funding to the Australian Research Network for Advanced Materials Executive Committee.
- The Committee will endeavour to inform successful applicants within one month of the application being received.
4. International Visiting Scientist - Lecture Tour
Funds have been allocated to contribute to the costs of bringing an internationally renowned researcher/scientist to Australia organized by the ECR/students community. This researcher can be from any area of research interest to the Advanced Materials Network.
Application and Assessment Procedure:
- Applications should address the following criteria: brief CV, recent publications and abstract of talks for researcher to be invited.
