Distingushed Achievement Award in Machining Technology (2000), for remarkable contribution to the development and research of machining technology, granted in: the 5th International Conference on Progress of Machining Technology, Beijing, 16-20 September 2000, organised by Japan Society for Precision Engineering and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Finalist of Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology (one of the top five), for nano-friction and nano-wear and stress criterion for onset of phase transformation in mono-crystalline silicon, Foresight Institute, USA, 1999 to 2002.

Second Prize, for "Indentation Induced Damage in Silicon - New Findings (microphoto poster)" by L Zhang and I Zarudi, in The 12th International Conference on Wear of Materials, held in Atlanta USA 25-29 April 1999.

Two Best Paper Awards: (1) Best Paper Award in Advanced Materials and Structures and (2) Best Overall Congress Paper Award, for "Nano-Mechanics in the Indentation of Mono-Crystalline Silicon" by L Zhang and H Tanaka, in The 2nd Australasian Congress on Applied Mechanics, held in Canberra 10-12 February 1999.
